William Bingham Meade, Sr was born August 22, 1762 in Frederick Co. Va. He was a veteran of the Revolutionary War, serving two enlistments. He first enlisted when he was about 14 years old, and then again in September 1778.
He served between September 1778 and January 1781 out of Wilkes County, North Carolina. He served under Captain George Baker, Colonel Howard and Colonel Cleveland. He took part in the Battle of Cowpens, which was one of the defining battles of the Revolutionary War. He told of how General Morgan came around the camp the night before the battle, telling the men of his plans for combat with the British. During the battle, William was shot and suffered a head wound. His fellow soldiers, thinking he was dead, took his coat and boots. He was in the hospital for more than 9 months. He received both land bounty warrants and pension in Logan County Virginia (now West Virginia). He also fought as an older man in the War of 1812 in the Bluebeard Company.
When he enlisted in the Revolutionary war, he enlisted under the name William Mead, but later changed the spelling of his last name, adding an (e) to the end of Mead. He wrote a letter stating there was another William Mead living in the area that was of poor moral character so, he was added the (e) to the end of his name so as not to be confused with him.
William married Mildred Esther Davis who was born about 1752. In about 1790, he moved his wife and children to the old Vancouver Settlement at the block house at the forks of the Sandy, but after receiving a land bounty, he again moved with his family to Marrowbone Creek in Logan Co, Virginia (now West Virginia) around 1801.
William Bingham Meade and Mildred Esther Davis had the following children: William Bingham Meade, Jr. Elizabeth Meade Brewer Samuel Meade Margaret Meade Watts Anna Meade Burges John Meade Keziah Meade Cline Frances Sofanna Meade Gooding
William died February 11, 1841, and is buried at middle Honey Branch Cemetery on Gennies Creek.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
