John Calvin McElwee was born 19 January 1765 at Brunswick County, Virginia, a son of William McElwee, II, and Janet Black. He married Jane Leslie/Lesslie/Lasley about the year 1790 at South Carolina. They had children: William (1791), John Robinson (1795), George Leslie (1797), Grace Leslie (1797), Eleanor (1799), and James (1801).
Following the death of Jane in 1803, John married Margaret Crawford in 1805. They had children: Samuel (1806), Lawson Crawford (1809), Jane (1811), Mary Turner (1814), Margaret Emeritta (1817), Job S. B. (1819), and Martha E. A. (1824).
John McElwee, age 75, appears in the Revolutionary War Pensioner Census of 1841 as living at York District, South Carolina. The McElwee property at York County was the site of the Battle of King's Mountain. On the day of the battle, October 7, 1780, a group of Tories stopped at the McElwee home to build a fire in the yard and were preparing to kill hogs, when they heard the sound of the battle and fled. William McElwee, II, and his two sons, William McElwee III, age 19, who was at home on a leave of absence from his command, and John McElwee, age 15, shouldered their muskets and went forward to participate in the battle. As they were leaving, John started to turn back, but his mother called out to him to go forward to help his countrymen, which he did without further hesitation. All three McElwees, the father and his two younger sons, were American patriots, although neither the father, nor younger son was a member of any official military organization that engaged in the battle.
John Calvin McElwee died 11 May 1843. His Last Will and Testament was probated 17 May 1843 at York County, South Carolina. He was laid to rest at the Bethany Associate Reformed Presbyterian (A.R.P.) Church Cemetery of Clover, York County, South Carolina, beside his wives Jane and Margaret.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
