Andrew McDowell was born 3 Feb 1757 in Somerset County, NJ, near New Brunswick, and when two years old moved with his parents to Middlesex County, NJ.
While residing in Middlesex, Andrew McDowell was enrolled in 1775 in a militia company and was called into service in Jan 1776 and served at various times until Aug 1777, as a private and sergeant under Captains Jacob Piatt, Wincant, Wetherhill, Longstreet, Chambers, and Williamson, Colonels Heard, Forman, Neilson, Scudder, Hyer, and Taylor in the New Jersey Troops, was in the campaign on Long Island, at the Battle of Harlem Heights and White Plains; went on an expedition to "Bonnet's Island" where a large party of the enemy was captured and on another expedition as far as Sandy Hook, where a large quantity of sugar and rum was captured. He also served in Monmouth County and the Sourland Mountain District guarding the inhabitants from the Tories. In Aug 1777 Andrew McDowell was apointed by Governor Livingston Lieutenant in the New Jersey Troops and served as lieutenant and adjutant at various times until the close of the war under Captains Joakim Gulick, Williamson, Morgan, Dey, and Guest, Colonels John Neilson, and Taylor.
He stated that he was at the Battles of Westfield, Springfield, and Elizabethtown; that at the time of the Battle of Monmouth he was at the Scotch Meeting House. He served also at the time of the Pennsylvania Revolt. His entire service amounted to nine months as private and sergeant and nine months as lieutenant and acting adjutant. He died in Middlesex County 25 Aug 1834.
He married, on 28 Mar 1802, Mrs. Jane (Whitlock) Merrell or Merrill, widow of Richard Merrell or Merrill. Richard was orn 7 Jul 1759, married Jane Whitlock on 5 Feb 1784, and died 29 Mar 1798.
