Author: Kenneth Jesse Kellar

William McCasland was born on 8 March 1758 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

In July of 1776, William, while residing in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, entered the service as a Private under Captain Culberson for a period of three months. In 1777, he was drafted for three months under Captain Young and marched to Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where he was employed to prevent provisions from being carried to the British in Philadelphia. General Lacy was his chief commander. At the end of the three months, he was discharged and went home. In 1781, he was drafted at Loudon for a term of three months, marching to Little York, and then discharged. Volume VI of the 5th Series of Pennsylvania Archives gives numerous references to William’s service to his country. He applied for his pension on 11 February 1833. His pension number is W21790.

In about 1780, he married Eleanor [surname unknown]. Their known children were:

  • Jain [Jane] was born on 14 February 1782 and married Charles Barnes.
  • Dorothea was born on 17 July 1784.
  • Susanna was born on 27 May 1786 and married Samuel Snodgrass.
  • John was born on 27 July 1788.
  • Mary was born on 3 September 1790.
  • Eleanor was born on 23 December 1793 and married Joseph English.
  • Sarah was born on 19 February 1795.
  • William D. was born on 24 April 1797 and married Nancy Baird.
  • Phoebe was born on 13 July 1800 and married James Bain.
  • Lovina was born on 28 April 1802 and married John Duffey.
  • James H. was born on19 April 1804 and married Jane Hood.

The family left Pennsylvania and moved to Henry County, Kentucky, for a period of about seven years. In about 1814, the family moved to Jefferson County, Indiana. The Patriot died there on 3 May 1839 in Jefferson County, Indiana. A Veteran’s Administration gravestone was recently placed at Old Bethel Cemetery in the town of Hanover. It is thought that this is a cenotaph memorial.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
