Author: Mark Andrew Davis

William Mathews/Matthews was born about 1751 in Ireland.

He married Rachel Gordon, about 1772. Their known children were:

  • George E. was born on 29 December 1773.
  • Prudence was born about 1776.
  • William Samuel was born on 28 December 1779.
  • Isaac was born on 30 September 1781.
  • Levi was born on 31 March 1789.
  • Thomas was born on 24 July 1791.
  • Rachel was born in 1794.

He enlisted on 1 October 1776, at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as a Private in the Company of Captain Wendel Oury of the Eighth Regiment of the Pennsylvania Line under the command of Colonel Aeneas Mackay. The officers were later replaced by Captain Samuel Brady and Colonel Daniel Brodhead after Mackay died in 1777. William continued his service until October 1779, when he was discharged at Pittsburgh after three years of service.

The family moved from Beaver County, Pennsylvania, to Trumbull County, Ohio, about 1804. It is said of his life that he maintained a small farm and was a deacon in his church. By the time he applied for a pension, he lost most of his assets and was unable to farm.

He died on 14 April 1834 at Kinsman, Trumbull County, Ohio, and was buried at Kinsman Presbyterian graveyard. His epitaph reads “Wm Mathews DIED Apr. 14, 1834 aged 84 years - - Rachel Mathews DIED Apr. 8, 1827, Aged 72 Years.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
