Author: Mark Andrew Davis

Roswell Mallison was born on 22 May 1762 in Groton, New London, Connecticut.

In October 1779, he enlisted for one year in the Company of Captain William Latham of the Connecticut Militia, where he was stationed at Fort Griswold. After his tour, he returned to his home in Groton. In July 1780, he was drafted into the 8th Company under Captain Billings or Brigham, commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel J. Sherman. The Company marched to New London, Connecticut, then on to New Haven. From there, they marched to Nelson’s Point, near West Point in New York. They remained there about two weeks before marching to Orange, New Jersey. After his six-month tour ended, he was discharged and returned home.

In 1781, he entered service as a substitute for a term of seven months in the Company of Captain Charles Smith commanded by Colonel Tyler of the Connecticut Militia. He entered service again in 1782 under Captain Timothy Allen. On 6 September 1782, he was in a Battle with the British at New London. Colonel Ledgand was in command, and General Arnold had the British. During the fighting, he was wounded by a musket shot to his left leg below his knee. That injury left him crippled in that leg.

Roswell married Elizabeth Pelton on 12 October 1783 in Groton, Connecticut.

  • Prentice was born about 1785.
  • Bridget was born about 1786.
  • Betsey was born December 1787 and married to Hibbend Stoddard.
  • Abel was born about 1780 and married Ruth.
  • Avery was born about 1793.
  • Sally was born about 1794 and married Philo Warner.
  • Sophia was born in 1800 and married Abraham Warne.
  • Cynthia was born about 1804.
  • Eunice was born about 1806 and married William Taylor.
  • David was born about 1808.

About 1807, the family moved from Groton to Harpersfield, New York.

Roswell made his Last Will and Testament on 16 March 1845, in Harpersfield, Delaware County, New York. He listed his heirs as his wife Elizabeth, children Eunice, Sophia Warn, Sally Warner, Prentice, and Betsey Stoddard. Also, grandson Francis Avery Mallison. The Will was proven in court on 3 October 1845.

The Patriot died on 11 June 1845 in Delaware County, New York, and was buried at Stamford Cemetery.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
