Author: David Crandall Schafer
Joseph Lumbard was the son of Captain Benjamin Lumbart and his wife Mary Davis and was born at the Town of Barnstable, March 19, 1755.  Joseph had three siblings, Martha, Benjamin and Davis all born at Barnstable.

Joseph Lumbard Jr’s first wife was Phebe Linnel, daughter of Samuel Linnel and his wife Mary, born May 12, 1758 at Barnstable.  Joseph and Phebe were married April 2, 1774 at Barnstable.  It is believed they had one daughter Asenath before the death of Phebe about 1780.  The second wife of Joseph Lumbard Jr. was Sarah Ellis, also “of Barnstable” as reported in the Barnstable record of their marriage dated January 10. 1781.  To this marriage was born one daughter, Phebe, November 26, 1781 at Barnstable.

At the age of 20, Joseph Lumbard Jr. enlisted as a private in Captain James Davis’s Massachusetts militia company of 50 men from Barnstable including his brother Benjamin.  He enlisted July 1, 1775 and from the pay roll of Capt. Davis served to November 1, 1775.  Joseph also served as a private in Captain Elisha Nye’s company of 53 men from Barnstable (including his fellow Centerville resident Silvanus Hinckley) stationed at the Elizabeth Islands for the “Seacoast Defense” from January 27, 1777 to April 20, 1777 with service of 84 days.

Less than a month after returning from his service at the Elizabeth Islands Joseph’s father Captain Benjamin Lumbard (Lumbart) died May 15, 1777 in the 49th year of his life and was buried at the Centerville Ancient Cemetery.  Joseph’s mother Mrs. Mary Lumbard died September 20, 1782 in the 52nd year of her age and is buried beside her husband.

In the 32nd “Year of his age” Mr. Joseph Lumbard died October 14, 1783 and was buried alongside his parents Captain Benjamin Lumbart and Mrs. Mary Lumbard at the Ancient Cemetery of Barnstable.

The 1790 Census in the Town of Barnstable records the household of Sarah Lumbart having 3 females and no males.

Phebe Lumbart “daughter of Mr. Joseph and Mrs. Sarah Lumbart” died February 9, 1798 in her 17th year and is buried in the Centerville Ancient Cemetery.  There is no headstone for either Phebe Lumbard first wife of Joseph; nor his second wife Sarah in the Centerville Ancient Cemetery.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
