Philip Lowe was born on 27 June 1755 in Old Warwick, Rhode Island, the nephew of General Nathanael Greene.

On 20 October 1778, he married Jean Darling. She died not long after, and he married a second time to Mrs. Mary (Sharpe) Jones, a widow. Both marriages took place at the Midway Congregational Church in Liberty County, Georgia. Among the children of his second marriage was Eliza Greene Low, born on 29 September 1785. She would marry David Robarts in 1810.

He was commissioned an Ensign of the 2nd Regiment North Carolina Continental Line in 1775. A year later, he was promoted to Lieutenant of the same regiment. In 1777, he resigned and was commissioned Captain 4th Battalion Georgia Continental Line. Philip spent most of 1777 recruiting for the Georgia Continental Line in North Carolina, then a  Major 4th Battalion Georgia Continental Line 1778. He moved to Liberty County, Georgia in 1778. In that same year, he served as a member of the Georgia Executive Council. His military service continued, and he fought in the Third Florida Expedition of 1778. That same year, he was captured at Savannah and would be paroled to Sunbury in 1779. He was recaptured at Pon Pon, South Carolina in 1780 and was imprisoned at Charleston in the Dungeon of Exchange Building. He was again paroled and, in early 1780 became a Lieutenant-Colonel, but would retired from military service later that year.

He returned to Liberty County and was listed as a Rebel in the British Treason Act 1780. He was awarded 800 acres of bounty land for his loyal services.

The Patriot died on 28 September 1785 in Liberty County.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
