Author: Mr. Joshua Shawn Wilberger
Descendant of an ancient family of both English and Scottish extract. Brother Thomas appointed as 2nd Lieutenant in 2nd Battallion of Baltimore and Harford Counties, Capt. Zachariah McCubbin's Company (an uncle). Received second commission, dated 13 July 1776, which designated him as 2nd Lieutenant in a Maryland Regiment of Riflemen (with future Cincinnati Member Otho Holland Williams). Served in Long Island Campaign under Capts. Thomas Beale and Alexander Lawson Smith. Taken prisoner 16 November 1776 at Ft. Washington aboard prison ship "Jersey". He declined an offer from relative Admiral Sir Thomas Hood of 10,000 (unclear if dollars or pounds) and high rank to desert the cause. Declared supernumerary 1 January 1781 Served as collector of port of Georgetown, popular posting for veterans after the Revolution. Free speech advocate who defended Alexander Hanson, publisher of the Federal Republican & Commercial Gazette, who criticized U.S. for participation in War of 1812 and was killed by angry mob who stormed the publisher's offices. Originally buried Washington D.C., re-interred 5 Nov 1908. Received BLW #1294-300-19 Mar 1792. Original Member of the Society of the Cincinnati of Maryland - descendant should consider inquiring to Maryland Society if Capt. Lingan (known as the propositus) is currently represented. If not, descendant can prove lineage and apply for membership in the Maryland Society.
