Cornelius was drafted for 14 days as a private in Captain John J. Graham’s Company at Fort Montgomery. He enlisted, on 10 August 1776, for five months as a private in the Company of Captain John Graham, of the Regiment of Colonel Albert Paulding. They sailed down the Hudson River to Terrytown. They marched to Horse Neck, then to the Artillery at King’s Bridge, until the British were engaged at the Battle of White Plains, on 28 October 1776. The King’s Bridge Redoubt fortification, established in 1776, in present-day New York City that was on the Old Post Road.

In September 1777, he was drafted for twenty-one days as a private in the Company of Captain Montgomery of the Regiment of Colonel McClaugherty. Twenty-four hours after that term ended, he was drafted into the Company for forty-nine days in Wagon Service. In the summer of 1778, he served for at least three months as a private in the Company of Lieutenant Samuel Barclay under the command of Colonel Johnson.

He was drafted for eight months, in April or May of 1780, as a private in the Company of Lieutenant James Morrill as a Ranger. In 1781 and 1782 he served at least four months but did not recall the officers. Records indicate that he was five feet, six inches tall, with a fair complexion, light hair, and gray eyes.

About 1794, the family moved from Orange County to Ithaca, Tompkins County, New York.

He died on 8 February 1848, aged 91 years, ten months, and nine days. His wife died on 3 August 1841, aged 82 years, three months, and 25 days. Both are buried at Ithaca City Cemetery. His will was dated 22 December 1847 and probated on 16 April 1848. He devised his estate for his children in both land and currency.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
