Joseph Ligon was born 1730 in Henrico, Virginia to Joseph Ligon and Judith Stewart.

Joseph and his wife Judith Watts had five sons: Joseph, James, Thomas, Obediah and Blackmon.

Joseph Ligon entered army in 1775 as Lieutenant of Halifax County, promoted to Captain of Virginia Militia in 1777.

Joseph and his family settled in Halifax County, VA where he remained until his death on 18 May 1780.
