My fifth great grandfather, Joseph Lewis was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts on 10 August 1738.
He married Molly Baker in Dedham, Massachusetts on 27 November 1760; “Marryed by ye Revd Mr. Andrew Tyler”.
He died of apoplexy (age 66) in Dedham, Massachusetts on 09 June 1804 and is buried in the Old Village Cemetery in Dedham.
Boston Gazette; 06-11-1804 (June 11), Vol. 16, Issue 30, p.2: "at Dedham, suddenly, on Saturday morning last, Mr. Joseph Lewis, aged 66. A man eminent for his virtues; his life was a display of all those qualities which adorn the character of the christian; in him were combined the tender and affectionate husband, the kind and good parent, the amiable and sincere friend; those who were most intimately acquainted with him can best appreciate his worth. His remains were interred yesterday afternoon."
Inscribed at the bottom of his tombstone: Here lies entombed beneath this mossy sod An honest man, "the noblest work of God," In whom those beauties of a noble mind, Faith and good works were happily combined; A friend and comfort to the sick and poor, Want never knocked unheeded at his door; A tender husband, father, brother, friend, Lewis He crowned his virtues with a pious end.

Minute Men, April, 1775; Captain, 1st Dedham, Co., Col. William McIntash's (McIntosh's) Reg't., Mass. Militia, March, 1776." In 1895, another descendent of Joseph Lewis (my 1st cousin, 4X removed) was able to prove that Joseph was a Patriot, in order to join the Sons of the Revolution organization. Joseph is the father-in-law of 1st cousin to President John Adams.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
