[Reverend] Thomas LEVERETT (May 12, 1755-June 8, 1834) - A Baptist preacher, born in Wilkes County, served first as a Ranger, and in 1780, joined Captain John Clarke's Company at Columbia Court House. He served 18 months under Colonel Elijah Clarke, Josiah Dunn, and Samuel Alexander. He was honorably discharged. In 1781, he enlisted in the Georgia Continental Line, where he served for 3 years, until the close of the War. Also had nine brothers who also served.

Thomas LEVERETT, 1755-1834, was granted land bounty for his military service from the State of Georgia, on March 25, 1784, for 287.5 acres land in Washington County, Georgia;

On July 28, 1784, a land grant of 200 acres was granted to Thomas LEVERETT from the State of Georgia, in Wilkes County, Georgia: Written: July 28 1784; Recorded: July 29 1784 Georgia Land Grant Register, Book DDD, page 203:

To all to whom these presence come, GREETING:

On February 12, 1785, Thomas LEVERETT, 1755-1834, received a land grant from the State of Georgie, for 300 acres land, in Wilkes County, Georgia; Written: February 12 1785;Recorded: February 15 1785; Georgia Land Grant Register, Book FFF, page 827;

In the Early Tax List of 1785, a substitute for the 1790 Wilkes County, Georgia census records destroyed by the British during the War of 1812 enumerates Henry LEVERTT, John LEVERETT, Robert LEVERETT, and Thomas EVERETT.

Thomas LEVERETT, 1755-1834, received military land bounty from the State of Georgia, for 250 acres land, on February 2, 1786, order signed in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia by Col. Elijah Clarke--'This grant to be of "good land"' from the new counties of Franklin and Washington.

On July 23, 1788, Thomas LEVERETT, 1755-1834, was granted 170 acres land, in Wilkes County, Georgia, from the State of Georgia. Deed Written: July 23 1788; Recorded: July 24 1788, Georgia Land Grant Register, Book QQQ, P:166;

Thomas J. LEVERETT married July 3, 1789, Wilkes County, Georgia, Mary Ann GRIFFIN, born March 22, 1772, North Carolina, died February 1850, in Milltown, Chambers County, Alabama, a daughter of Judge John GRIFFIN, and of his wife, Sarah 'Sally' WILLIAMSON;

Thomas Leverett              b. 5/12/1755                     d. 6/8/1834         TROUP COUNTY, GEORGIA

 

He enlisted in Wilkes County, Georgia and guarded the area against Indians, Tories, and British.  In 1780, he volunteered at the Columbia Court House as a private in Captain John Clark's Company of Colonel Elijah Clarke's Infantry and Cavalry of the Georgia Militia.  He fought at the Siege of Augusta and later enlisted for three years in the Georgia Continental Line.  He lived in Wilkes County for 30 years before moving to Putnam and finally Troup County, where he died.

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format.
