Johann Thomas Lenich was born on 18 March 1721 in Franconia, Germany. He came to America with his brother Peter arriving in Philadelphia on 24 September 1753, on board the Ship “Neptune”, John Mason, Master from Rotterdam, last from Cowes. On the ship list his last name was spelled (Lennich).

In the 1754 Philadelphia Town census, Johann Thomas and his brother Johann Peter Lennich are listed.

Around 1750 he marries Barbara (last name unknown) at Heidelberg Township, Lancaster County (now Berks County) and have 8 children, their naming being Margareth, who marries John Frederick Glossbrenner, Eva who marries Henry Fidler, Johann Peter, Anna Maria who marries Johann Adam Koch, John George who marries Anna Marie Leibig , Maria Christina (my line) who marries Johannes Stein, and Barbara who maries John Reinhart. All of their children are baptizes at Christ Lutheran Reformed Church in Stouchsburg, Berks County, Pa.

In the last 1750’s and early 1760’s his name listed in the Heidelberg Township, Lancaster/Berks County purchasing land and paying taxes. By 1768 he owns 100 acres of land, 2 horses and 3 cattle.

On 28 May 1778 Thomas and his brother Peter take the Oath of Allegiance at Heidelberg Township, Berks County before Peter Spycker,

In the 1779 Berks County Federal Supply tax, he is listed as Thomas Leanig Weaver. He has 100 acres with 2 horses and 5 cattle, his tax is 800 pounds.

The St. Daniel Church Veteran Burial Record has him listed as being in Lancaster County Militia on 2 August 1778, serving under Captain Jonathan McClure’s Company, 4th Battalion. The history of Dauphin County, Volume 1, page 889 also list a Johann Lenich. Both list his correct date of birth, death and the correct Church Cemetery in Berks County.

On 6 August 1789, Thomas Lenich of Heidelberg Township, Berks County, writes and signs his last will. His wife Barbara has died already, only the children are listed in his will. At the time of his death, he own 143 acres of land, 2 horses, 4 cattle and 7 sheep. As a life long weaver, he must have had a very large operation, because in his last inventory it listed 4 Looms, 6 spinning wheels and large quantities wool and hemp.

On 17 November 1789, John Thomas Lenich dies, and is buried along side of his wife, Barbara at St. Daniels Church (Eck Kirch) Old Graveyard in Heidelberg Township, row 15 grave 39. Tombstone reads, born March 18, 1721: died November 17, 1789: in wedlock 39 years with Barbara ________: 2 sons, 5 daughters.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
