Joel Legg was born 28 May 1758 in Mendon, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, and died 08 Apr 1845 in Speedsville, Tompkins Co., New York. He married Sarah Holbrook (1763-1844) on 06 Aug 1781 in Mendon, Worcester Co., Massachusetts. They had 13 known children: Jacob (1) Legg (1781-1800); Judson (1) Legg (1783-?); Stephen (1) Legg (1785-1786); Leonard Legg (1789-1887); Peter Legg (1791-1869); Laten Legg (1794-1861), Sarah Legg (1796-?); Almina Legg (1799-?); Jacob (2) Legg (1801-1830); Abigail Legg (1803-1839); Judson (2) Legg (1806-1828); Stephen (2) Legg (1807-?); and Margery Ann Legg (1809-1828). Sometime after the 1820 Census, Joel removed from Mendon, MA and settled in Tompkins County, New York.
As listed in the "Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution," (Vol. 9, p. 657), Joel Legg served in numerous Massachusetts and Rhode Island units during the Revolutionary War between 1775 and 1781. His cumulative tours of duty amounted to nearly 38 months over a six-year span. His first service was as Private in Capt. Samuel Warren's Company, Col. Joseph Read's 20th Massachusetts Regiment. He served as Private in all of these tours except for the last one where he served as Corporal in Capt. Phillip Ammidon's Company, Col. Dean's Regiment, in Rhode Island. He was described as 5 ft. 10 in. tall, with dark complexion and light brown hair, gray eyes, and residence of Mendon, MA.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
