John LeGrande was born about 1753 in Virginia.
One document shows that in 1779, he was serving with the German Battalion, Continental Troops, in the Regiment of Lieutenant-Colonel Ludowick Weltner. It is likely he served multiple years. In 1832, he participated in the Cherokee Land Lottery of Georgia, winning a land lot in what is now Cherokee County.
On 17 April 1779, in Halifax County, Virginia, he married Elizabeth Younger. She was born in 1765 and died in 1809. Among their known children were:
Nancy was born on 9 January 1780 and married Samuel Bentley.
Susan was born about 1785 and married Zachariah Seymour.
Sarah was born on 12 January 1787 and married John Seamaster.
Joel was born about 1788 and married Nancy Weaver.
On 8 August 1827, he married Lucina or Lucinda Christian in Elbert, Geogia. There are no known children from this marriage.
In 1840, he was enumerated in the U.S. Census of Forsyth County, Georgia, #273. John was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. He was excommunicated because he used profanity. Later, he was reinstated, and the church gave the official minutes to the Watson family many years ago, along with Mr. LeGrand's history and where he wanted to be buried.
The Patriot died about 1840 in Forsyth County, Georgia. He is buried on the Watson farm, and his grave is marked with a bronze marker from the Veterans Administration. It is thought that the dates on the marker are incorrect.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
