Author: Edward Lary
Robert Lane was one of the original colonists who founded Newport, NH. As reported in Lane Genealogies, Vol II, Newport, NH was chartered 06 Oct 1761, and colonized by Congregationalists from Killingworth, CT in the summer of 1766. Robert Lane was chosen chairman of a committee of proprietors from Killingworth to assign lots in the new plantation. He moved his family there in 1766, where he built a mansion on Pine Street in the village.

Robert Lane was moderator of Newport from 1772 to 1775. In Newport he signed the Patriots’ Association Test on 20 Jun 1776, and was one of the seventeen original members of the Congregational Church, 28 Oct 1779. He was an active town member with a strong Puritan ethic. On more than one occasion he brought complaints before both the Church and the Town on issues he felt strongly about. One of those issues led to his membership withdrawal from the Church.

Robert Lane was born in Killingworth, CT on 20 Nov 1713, the son of John Lane and Hannah Parks. He married Mary Thatcher on 04 Jul 1744. She was born in Lebanon, CT on 20 Apr 1717, the daughter of Thomas Thatcher and Mary Dean. Together they raised ten children, all of whom were born in Killingworth, CT before their family moved to Newport, NH. Robert died in Newport on 13 Jun 1794 at the age of 80. His wife died three years later at the home of one of their sons in Freehold, NY.

Robert Lane is buried in the Pine Street East Cemetery in Newport, NH. Presumably this is not too far from where he built the original family homestead in 1766.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
