John Knight was born about 1747 in Goochland County, Virginia. His parents were John Knight and Elizabeth Woodson. The Knight's and the Woodsons had lived in tidewater Virginia since the 1630s.
It is not known why he left Virginia but he married his first wife, Rachel Anderson, 9 January 1774, in Cheraw District, South Carolina.
John Knight served as a Sergeant in the First Battalion Georgia, Colonel Robert Rae, 1 Apr 1779 to 1 Feb 1780 and fought at Silver Bluff. He was a soldier in the South Carolina Militia, Colonel Benton, during 1781 and 1782.
He received a land grant of 200 acres in Beaufort District, SC in 1785, and in 1786, another grant of 250 acres. John received a grant of 200 acres in Effingham County, Georgia on May 19 1789 and a grant of 250 acres in Burke County, Georgia on September 20, 1789. Another grant of 250 acres was granted on February 13, 1799 in Effingham County. In 1803, John Knight and his son Jonathan were granted land in Spanish East Florida.
In his Oath of Allegiance to the Spanish Government, he stated that he was married, a farmer, born in Virginia, that he had with him, 1 son, 1 daughter, 2 Negroes, 2 horses, and 30 cattle. He was living in Fernandina.
In 1805, John asked to be released from his land grant due to poor eyesight and was granted permission to return to Augusta, Georgia on October 17, 1805.
Jonathan stayed in Florida until he was caught up in the patriot's Rebellion and had to return to Georgia.
(My 4GGF, Jonathan Knight, returned to Duval County Florida in 1844, died in 1852 and is buried in Middleburg, present Clay County.)
John Knight died after December of 1822 in Wayne County and is buried in Jesup, Georgia

He served as a private in South Carolina and drew land in the 1820 Land Lottery as a Revolutionary War Soldier and resident of Wayne County.

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
