Author: Carl Kenneth Fieth
Charles Kilgore was wounded while serving in Captain James Dysart’s company of Virginia militia at the Battle of Kings Mountain on 07Oct1780. Lewis Preston Summers tended to magnify the Washington County patriotism but failed to record the Kilgores’ service which Bobby Moss listed. Moss also names Robert, William, Hiram, and James Kilgore, brothers of Charles, as being in the Kings Mountain expedition.

Charles Kilgore, either the wounded soldier or his son Charles, shows in Washington County court records in June 1780 as surety for care of orphan Martin Duncan and in May 1781 for jury duty.

In 1782, Charles Kilgore paid Washington County taxes in Captain Alexander Barnett’s precinct. Kilgore showed seven horses, 20 cows, and slaves named Dilly and Nan.

15Apr1783 Washington County reviewed support for the casualties of war. William Moore, Frederick Fisher, the heirs of William Fowler, Bennoni Benning, and John Skeggs of BKM, Thomas Hobbs of the Cherokee expedition and John Cusick of Guilford Courthouse were sustained in their pension list. Charles Kilgore had no disability sufficient for WC court to support. Draper papers 3DD232 and 3DD58a are Samuel Newell’s 04Aug1823 letter to Governor David Campbell naming Charles Kilgore as one of those wounded at Kings Mountain. Newell was a magistrate of the 15Apr1783 court session not including Kilgore for county support.

In May 1797, Colonel Dysart sold 1780 acres on both sides of Copper and Valley Creeks to Charles Kilgore of Russell County. McConnell VA N 36.73668 W 82.46922

Per Federal Pension file S699-Charles Kilgore is inscribed on the roll of Tennessee 27th October 1810. Under the law of 10Apr1806 by the eleventh US Congress at $2.50 per month commencing 28th April 1809. Increased to $4.00 per month by law of 24th April 1816.

13Sep1819 letter from Greeneville TN to John C Calhoun, Secretary of War

Sir,
A Charles Kilgore of this county (Lee Co) being on the pension list of the United States as a pensioner [etc]
William Dickson

On 17May1820, Joseph Brown JP of Greene County signed in behalf of Charles Kilgore (X his mark) to get a pension certificate. In the form, he specified that Kilgore served under Captain James Dysart and Colonel William Campbell. Certificate issued 3 June 1820 to the pension agent at Greeneville Tennessee.

Federal pension file W7994 for Charles Kilgore born 1764 or 65 in Orange County NC show a teen age patriot serving in the area of Cumberland Gap. Bobby Moss indicates him to be the first son of the Charles Kilgore wounded at Kings Mountain.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
