Author: Robert Roy Thomas

Jacob Kent was born on 20 January 1750 in Leicester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, the son of Ebenezer and Sarah Kent.

He married Desire Proutey on 16 March 1771, and she died shortly after.

After Desire’s death, he married Mary Tucker on 13 April 1773 in Shrewsbury. Their known children were:

  • Reuben was born on 26 November 1773

He married his third wife, Abigail Barnes, on 3 October 1776 in Brookfield, Worcester County,  Massachusetts. Among their known children were:

  • Lucy was born on 31 July 1777 and died young.
  • Daniel was born on 31 December 1778 and married Nancy Young.
  • Asa was born on 9 May 1780 and married Susan Munro.
  • Mary “Polly” was born on 30 April 1782 and married John Jenkins.
  • James Blake was born on 7 January 1784 and married Mary Hill.
  • Lucy was born on 15 December 1785 and died young.
  • Isaac was born on 12 September 1787.
  • Jacob was born on 29 July 1789 and married Dolly Gilbert.
  • Twins Benjamin and Joseph were born and died on 12 April 1791.
  • Hollis was born on 6 July 1792 and married Catherine Oaks.
  • Sarah “Sally” was born on 12 April 1795 and married Benjamin Waite.
  • Elizabeth was born on 3 March 1798 and married Titua Eddy.
  • John was born on 9 April 1801 and married Almira Hill.
  • Almira was born on 28 January 1803 and married Washington Hill.

Jacob served 22 days as a Private in the company of Captain Asa Danforth, commanded by Colonel Ebenezer Learned. They marched from Brookfield on 23 September 1777 to join the army of General Gates at the Northward.

He also served in the company of Captain Daniel Gilbert, commanded by Colonel Josiah Whitney, with service from 2 August 1778 to 13 September 1778 in Rhode Island. This was followed, probably in 1781, with service in the company of Captain Cutter. They marched on 27 August to join the regiment at West Point on 3 September.

On 5 January 1824, Jacob made his Last Will and Testament as a resident of Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He names his heirs as “my beloved wife” but fails to name her. He names his children Jacob Jr., Reuben, Daniel, and Asa, his deceased son James Blake, Hollis, Isaac, and daughter Alimore Hill. No other children were mentioned or alluded to. What is confusing are the probate records that refer to Abigail by name and allude that she is alive, which should be impossible if she died two years before her husband.

The Patriot died on 5 August 1825 in Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts, and was buried in Old Indian Cemetery, West Brookfield. His wife, Abigail, died on 16 November 1823 or 1828,

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
