Author: Barry Lee Kauffman
George Kaufman was born on Feb. 20, 1751 in Berks County, PA, the second son of Jacob and Anna Maria Kaufman who left their home in Wurttemberg, Germany for the new world, arriving in Philadelphia, PA. on the ship Phoenix Sept. 15, 1749. Their infant son Valentine remained in Germany with relatives due to the risks of 18th Century travel. Valentine would join the family in Berks County, PA on the land warranted to his father Jacob in 1750 by the William Penn family following his 16th birthday.
George grew up in his father’s farm, and married Catherine Hofer (1761-1839) in 1780 at St. Michaels Lutheran Church, the congregation his father had helped establish in 1769. With the outbreak of hostilities with England, George enlisted in the 3rd Company, 3rd Battalion of the Berks County Militia. He was selected to serve as a 2nd Lieutenant of that unit. His service in his Company is unrecorded, but it is known that the 3rd Battalion of the Berks County Militia protected the citizens of northern Berks County from the Indian allies of the British. It is also known that elements of the 3rd Battalion under Col. Michael Lindenmuth saw active duty in the months prior to the Continental Army’s encampment at Valley Forge in the Fall of 1777. Two of George’s three brothers, Valentine and Phillip, served under him in the 3rd Company, 3rd Battalion during the Revolutionary War.
George’s father Jacob took the Oath of Allegiance on July 31, 1778. He served in the army as a young man in Europe and used that experience to participate in action in northern Berks County during the French and Indian War. Over 200 Berks County men, women, and children, including Jacob’s brother Christian, were killed by the Indian allies of the French during that conflict. Jacob was active in the Militia during the entire period, but was too old for military service by the time the Revolution began. However, he did his civic duty by delivering grain from his mill near Shartelsville, PA to the camps of Washington’s Army throughout the early phase of the Revolutionary War. Some of that food may have ended up feeding his sons or their friends and neighbors.
George returned to farming following the war and raised a family of four sons and two daughters. He died Sept, 9, 1817 and was buried in the old churchyard of St. Michael’s Church, Tilden Twp., Berks County, PA
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
