Author: Jerry Dale Jones
Ambrose Jones was born in Monroe County, VA on 12 Aug 1756. He married Martha Craig in Greenbrier County, VA on 30 December 1784. They had the following children:

William, John, Jane, Priscilla, Barbara, Nancy, Ginny, Sinthy, James, Ambrose & Richard.

Ambrose enlisted on 19 July 1777 in Augusta County, VA for three years. He served in Captain Granville Smith and Ensign Robert Kirk's company under Colonel William Grayson. He then served in Captain Thomas Bell and Captain Alexander Breckenridge's companies under Colonel Nathaniel Gist in the 16th VA Regiment.

He was promoted to corporal in October 1778. He was at Valley Forge during the winter of 1778, where he was among the sick. He was taken prisoner at the siege of Charleston in 1780, escaped and reached home 18 days before his enlistment expired.

After the war Ambrose relocated his family to Morgan County, Kentucky where he resided until his death on 12 June 1833.

His widow received a pension for his service.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
