Matthew Johnson was born before 1753. During the American Revolutionary War, he served as a Private in the ranks of the South Carolina militia. After being married, he would have a son James Johnson born before 1773.  Matthew Johnson died on January 13, 1821 in Laurens, South Carolina. His wife would pass away before 26 September 1820.
