Qualifying Service Description:
  1. 1779-1780, he served as a Captain in the Georgia Province of the South Carolina troops in the Regiment of Colonel Andrew Pickens.
  2. 1781-1782, he was a Captain in the Regiment of Colonel Robert Anderson of the South Carolina Line, Georgia Province.

John Lawson Irwin was born on 29 August 1755 in Mecklenburg, North Carolina. He was the son of Thomas Irwin and Rebecca Roger, one of eleven siblings. His family moved from North Carolina to Georgia in 1757.

He met Rebecca Sessions, and they were married on 24 December 1790 in Washington County, Georgia. They were the parents of the following known children:

  • Alexander was born on 29 August 1792 and married Margaret Moore Lawson.
  • William was born about 1794 and married Margaret Lawson.
  • Rhoda Nancy was born about 1799 and married Stephen Daniel.
  • Jared was born in 1800 and married Letta Pelt.
  • Rebecca was born about 1804.

During the Revolutionary War, he served in the Georgia Militia from November 1775 to December 1778, reaching the rank of Captain. His brother was Colonel Jared Irwin who was twice elected Governor of Georgia. John served again in the War of 1812 as a Brigadier General.

He passed away on 1 January 1822 in Washington County, Georgia, and was buried in the Irwin Family Cemetery in Tennille.
