Author: Ernest Loran Sutton

Ebenezer Ingalsbe served from Massachusetts in both the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War.  He was born 10 January 1730 and raised at Shrewsburg, Worcester, Massachusetts.  He married Susannah Robbins in 1751 and they had ten children:  John, Joseph (1755), Joseph (1757), Eunice, Susannah, Aaron Newton, Ebenezer, Levi (1771), Levi (1773) and Asa.  His sons John and Ebenezer also served in the Revolutionary War.

During the Revolutionary War, Ingalsbe marched as a sergeant with Robert Andrew's Company of Minuteman on the Alarm of 19 April 1775, from the Second Precinct at Shrewsbury to Cambridge for 19 days.  He later served as a Captain in Colonel Job Cushing’s Regiment engaged from 1 September 1777 to 29 November 1777, in the Northern Department including ten days’ (200 miles) travel time home.  He also served as Captain in the Fifth Company of Colonel Job Cushing's Sixth Worcester County Regiment.  He appears on a list of officers endorsed 1 January 1778.

Muster Rolls list his surname as Ingalsbe throughout the war, however; his family surname, including his descendants, is Ingalsby.   His parental surname and that of his three brothers is spelled Ingoldsby.  Ingalsbe is recognized by Massachusetts and the present-day Veterans Affairs.

After the War, Ingalsbe moved to Hartford, Washington County, New York, where he lived until his death, 17 August 1802.  He was buried at the Old Hartford Cemetery at Foster, Washington County, New York.  His headstone is a modern Veterans Affairs horizontal bronze marker.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.

1Upon submission of a patriot biography, the patriot biography becomes the property of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, and may be edited to conform to the patriot biography submission standards.

Additional Information:
  • The patriot's name as it apears on a muster roll is Ingalsbe, however; the family surname is Ingalsby
  • The parental family surname is Ingoldsby
