Author: Michael Edwin Garey

Caleb Hyde was born July 29, 1739 in Franklin, New London, Connecticut the fourth son of Elijah Hyde and Ruth Tracy.  He married Elizabeth Sackett in 1761 in her birth town of Oblong, Dutchess, New York.  She was the daughter of Captain John Sackett, a doctor, and niece of Admiral Richard Sackett.  After their marriage, they settled in Lenox, Berkshire, Massachusetts.

At the beginning of the Revolutionary War Caleb was a Captain of the Militia in Lenox.  He responded to an alarm notice and marched with his company from Lenox to Ticonderoga, and from that date to the end of the war he was an active Patriot and frequently on duty in the field.  On Aug. 30, 1775, he was commissioned Junior Major, and subsequently Senior Major, and still later Lieutenant Colonel of Colonel Simons' regiment.  In October, 1781, he commanded a battalion of militia sent from Massachusetts to reinforce the Continental Army at Saratoga and served with credit under General Stark.  After the close of the war he was commissioned Brigadier General of the Massachusetts Militia, and was Sheriff of the county of Berkshire.  He was High Sheriff at the time the rebels of Shay’s Rebellion were executed.  Later he moved to Lisle, Broom, New York.   In 1803 he was elected senator in New York and in February, 1804, was chosen by the House of Assembly as one of the members of the Council of Appointment.

His wife Elizabeth died January 6, 1806 in Lisle, New York.  He survived her and died December 25, 1820 also at Lisle.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
