Author: Robert Roy Thomas

Zadoc Hutchins was born on 5 March 1757 in Killingly, Windham County, Connecticut.1 He was the son of Silas Hutchins.

He served during the Revolutionary War with his cousins Amas and Darrius in the Third Battalion of Wadsworth's Brigade, which was raised in June 1776 to reinforce General Washington in New York City. The force was caught in the retreat from the city on 15 September 1776 and suffered some losses, including Darius Hutchins. It was also engaged in the Battle of White Plains on 28 October 1776. Zadocls enlistment expired 25 December 1776.1,4

He married Elizabeth Spaulding in about 1775, and they had the following known children:4

  • Sarah was born on 5 January 1777.
  • Gratia was born on 24 December 1778 and died young.
  • Asa was born on 28 October 1780 and married 1) Fannie Larnard and 2) Susan Tucker.
  • Ruth was born on 17 May 1784 and was the second wife of Zodoc Spaulding.
  • Elizabeth “Betsey” was born on 2 November 1789 and married Andrew Baldwin.
  • Zadoc Jr. was born on 4 September and married Mary M. Parkhurst.

He is thought to have been a carpenter or furniture maker by trade, as he is listed in many probate files as being paid for a coffin.

The Patriot died on 17 February 1835 in Thompson, Windham County, Connecticut.2,3,4
