Author: Mark Andrew Davis

Ezekiel Huntley was baptized on 4 April 1731 in Lyme, New London, Connecticut, the son of David.

He was married to Mary [surname unknown] about 1755 and died before 1759.

  • Abigail was baptized on 20 July 1757.
  • Hannah was baptized on 20 July 1757.

He was married a second time on 5 November 1759 to Naomi Tiffany. Their known children were:

  • Loes was baptized on 18 September 1764.
  • Rufus was baptized on 18 September 1764.
  • Elias was baptized on 28 July 1765.
  • Ezra was baptized on 16 June 1771.
  • Ezekiel was baptized on 21 May 1780.

He served as a seaman on the Sloop-o-War General Greene, a Connecticut Privateer Brigantine, between 17 April 1782 and 7 May 1782. During that time, the sloop was under the command of Captain Gideon Olmsted. The well-equipped 130-ton vessel had 16 canons and a crew of 83 men.

Ship captured by the British Privateer ship Virginia on 7 May 1782 off the Nantucket Shoals. The men were taken to New York as prisoners aboard prison ships, where many died. Only thirty-five men were living when they were released in a prisoner exchange, though some died on the trip home. Ezekiel was very ill and died not long after he was released. It was unclear if he was being held on one of the prison ships or at the notorious New York Sugar House Prison.

The Patriot died about 1783, probably in Stonington, New London, Connecticut.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
