The Hopper Family
Garrit I. Hopper was the great great grandson of New Amsterdam trader, Andries Willemzen Hoppe (Hoppen) (born before 1631 in Holland and died after March 25, 1658 but before December 18, 1658 in New Amsterdam) Andries immigrated to New Amsterdam before 1651. His oldest daughter Tryntje was baptized in New Amsterdam on September 10, 1651. Andries and his wife Geertje (Hendricks) had three additional children – all sons: Willem (1654-1685), Hendrick (1656-1737) and Matthys Adolphus (1658-1730). Geertje had one more son, Gerrit Gerritzen by her 2nd husband Dirck Gerritzen Van Dien. Early records of New Amsterdam show that Andries Hoppe was a trader of many types of goods with the Native Americans, with other Dutch settlers (many who lived further up the Hudson) and Europeans who also traded in New Amsterdam. Most of the trades were pure barter transactions, but Dutch money, Indian wampum and beaver pelts were also used. He and his wife purchased property on what is now Broadway in 1653 and the property was recorded on early maps of the city. Andries only lived in New Amsterdam about 7 years preceding his death in 1658, but he left a tremendous legacy of recorded transactions. Many of these transactions are recorded in “The Hopper Family Genealogy” by Maria Jean Pratt Hopper. These records give quite an insight into the lives of Andries and Geertje. Although Andries may never have even seen the age of 30, he became the progenitor of a very large family with thousands of descendants.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
