Gabriel Holland (P-183523) George Emery Biles, SAR Member 79267 San Diego, CA
Gabriel Holland was born about 1750 in Kent Island, Queen Anne’s County, Maryland. His Father is recorded as Francis Holland and Mother Cordelia Knight. Peden (see below) records his father was Gabriel Holland and his mother Mary LNU. This documentation is uncertain. Gabriel Holland signed the Joppa Petition in 1768 in Baltimore County to re-locate the county seat from Joppa to Baltimore, and he appeared in the tax list for Back River Lower Hundred in 1773.
Gabriel Holland married Sarah Harriman (also spelled Harryman) on May 5, 1773 at St. James P.E. Church in Baltimore County. They had eight or more children, four of whom are listed below:
1. John Holland – born about 1775. 2. Thomas Holland – born 1783. 3. Gabriel Holland, Jr. – born 18 Feb 1789. 4. Sarah Holland – born 17 Dec 1792.
He took the Oath of Allegiance in 1778. He joined Colonel Otho Holland William’s Regiment in Frederick, Maryland and served in the 6th Maryland Regiment from 1778 to 1780.
After the Revolutionary War, Gabriel Holland and his family removed to Hopewell Township in Pennsylvania and then to Archer Township, Harrison County, Ohio. This latter is recorded in “Historical Collections of Harrison County, Ohio” which states “Gabriel Holland, a native of Maryland, of English descent, settled in Archer Township, Harrison County, Ohio, before 1814; married in Maryland, Sarah Harriman, had issue, eight children.” Detailed information about Gabriel Holland can also be located in Henry C. Peden, Jr.; “More Marylanders to Ohio and Indiana: Migrations Prior to 1835”; Colonial Roots: Lewes, DE, 2006; pp. 92-96.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
