Patriot Ludwig Herring (Haring/Hoering), Sr. was born June 27, 1734 in Brandenburg, Germany. In 1754, he immigrated to America on board the Neptune. He was naturalized on September 23, 1760. In 1755, he married his first wife Maria Christina Braunschweig outside of Philadelphia. The two had 12 children before he enlisted as an ensign in the Berks County Militia under Col. Daniel Hunter.
In 1781, Maria died. Two years later her married his second wife Susannah Orwig and the two had one daughter. He worked as a farmer, miller, sawyer, and finally an innkeeper.
He died on February 11, 1788 at the age of 53. He was interred at the Zions Cemetery in Orwigsburg, PA.
