The SAR Genealogy Staff, in coordination with the DAR Genealogy Corrections, has determined: the service for Samuel to be “suffered depredation”

DAR  Dept Box - Genealogy - Ancestor Corrections - Janelle

I would suggest checking out those sections from the Hunnewell book I mentioned. It looks like Samuel (born 1718) sustained a lot of damages to his property from the British in 1775. It will eventually be up to the verifying genealogist who gets our next paper on Samuel, but if it were me, I would take the military service from him and give him the Patriotic Service for sustaining damages from the British.

I should mention that if you go that route, the Hunnewell entry had me a little confused for a while. It mentions that Captain Samuel inherited the damaged land from his father, but the man born in 1759—and who eventually became a Captain in the Rev War—couldn’t have owned land in his own right by 1755. But it actually looks like it is referring to the Samuel, born in 1718, who was a Captain from an earlier war. He received a lot of that land in inheritance from his father, who was ALSO named Samuel, and ALSO a Captain—as if we didn’t have enough Captain Samuels in play already!

Also, I should mention that Samuel Henley A055050 and Elizabeth apparently had two sons named Samuel—one in 1743 and one in 1759. Presumably, the older son died relatively young, and then they had the 1759 child and gave him the same name.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
