The Oriskany Battleground is the site of one of the American Revolution's bloodiest battles. It lies partially in the Town of Rome and partially in the Town of Whitestown in Oneida County, New York and straddles New York State Route 69 about 2 miles west of the Village of Oriskany.

Frederick Johan Helmer was born on 1735 in German Flatts, Herkimer County, New York. He married Sabina or Edwina Hilts [baptism records say Sabrina], and to this union were born the following children:
Johann Georg Helmer was born on 13 November 1760 and probably died young.
Johanna Frierich “Frederick F.” was born on 28 October 1763 and died unmarried.
Johannes “John F.” was born on 3 September 1765 and married Margaret Munterbach.
Johann Georg “George” was born on 14 November 1767.
Anna was born on 22 January 1769.
He married a second time to Maria Elisabeth Dygert in about 1772 and they had the following children:
William F. was born on 19 July 1773 and married Elizabeth Myers.
Peter F. was born on 1776 and married Nancy Stahring.
Henry F. was born on 30 December 1777, five months after his father was killed. He married Eva Myers.
Frederick was a member of the Committee of Safety in Tryon County, where his name appears in many entries in the Minute Book. He was the first representative from German Flatts District on 2 June 1775.
He was serving as a Captain of a Company in the Regiment of Colonel Peter Bellinger. He was among the more than 800 men who marched from Fort Dayton to Oriskany under General Herkimer, and he was killed at the Battle of Oriskany on 6 August 1777.
Frederick was among the many Patriots who were killed on 6 Aug 1777 at the Battle of Oriskany in New York. His place of burial is unknown.
