Edward Halferty  SAR P-172684

Edward Halferty was born at County Down, Ireland in 1748.  He studied the priesthood at Ireland with his brother, Arthur, at behest of his Catholic father.  Edward’s mother, a protestant, provided financial assistance for Edward and Arthur to move to America so that they would not have to become priests.

Edward first settled at Shippensburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, before moving to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, after the Revolutionary War.

In 1777, Edward married Margaret Flack.  Together then had nine children:  Robert, Isabella, John, James, Agnes, William, Margaret, Mary and Edward.

During the Revolutionary War, Edward served in the Cumberland County Militia from 1780-1782 as a Private in Captain John McConnell's Company of Colonel Samuel Culbertson’s Regiment of the Fourth Battalion.

He continued service at Westmoreland County in 1783 as a Lieutenant, and then Captain in the Rangers, eventually ending up as a Colonel of the Fifth Regiment of the Westmoreland County Militia in 1793.

In 1786, for his service, Edward was granted a total of 700 acres at Westmoreland County.

Edward died in 1825, preceding his wife, at Fairfield, Westmoreland County.  He is buried at the Fort Palmer Cemetery at Ligonier.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
