John E. Hagey - ACN57306
John E. Hagey was born in 1748 in Strausbourg, Alsace (now France). He joined the French Army as part of the French Light Horse Guards. He served under Captain Esealine, Colonel Polotski, and General Duc Delausanne. He later became General Lafayette's body guard and was a hero at the Battle of Yorktown. He stayed in America after the Revolution and became an American citizen. He married Catherine Ault in Harrisburg, PA about 1785. In 1825 at age 77 he walked over 100 miles from Huntsville, AL to Nashville, TN to greet Lafayette during the General's grand tour of America. John E. Hagey died July 14, 1841 in Nashville, TN and is buried in the Nashville City Cemetery. According to his obituary, 5,000 people lined the streets of Nashville for his funeral procession.
