Author: Jerry Ray Sayre
John Hacker was born New Years Day, 1 Jan 1743 in Overwharton Parish, Stafford County. VA. He was the 2nd son of William and Ann (Turner) Hacker. John was the great grandson of Col. Francis Hacker who was one of Cromwell’s lieutenants, who led Charles the first to the scaffold in 1649 in the English Civil War.

John grew to manhood in Virginia and there he met and married Margaret Sleeth, the eldest of 6 children and daughter of John Alexander (P- 291082) and Mary Ann (Wallace) Sleeth. (source: Hacker’s Creek Descendants Assoc., Hacker Genealogies by J. W. Smith 1956)

When the War came, John served as a matross (cannoneer’s assistant) in Capt. Robert George's Company of Virginia Militia, Illinois Regiment under General George Rogers Clark.

He was one of 175 Men with Gen. Clark during the Campaign against Kaskaskia and Vincennes. He served at Fort Massac at the southern end of the Illinois Country in what is now a State Park in Metropolis, IL

He later represented Harrison County, VA in negotiations with the Indians in making the treaty of Fort Greenfield, Ohio in 1795. He was Sheriff of Harrison County, 1799-1801. As the 1st white settler on Hacker's Creek, Lewis County, (W)VA, the area is named in his honor.

After the Revolution, John Hacker settled down in the Hacker’s Creek area of what is now West Virginia, and finally passed from this life on 20 April 1824 in Weston, Lewis County, (W)VA. I have photos of his headstones.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.

Additional guidelines around the Biography writeup can be found here:

1Upon submission of a patriot biography, the patriot biography becomes the property of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, and may be edited to conform to the patriot biography submission standards.
