Author: Eric Henry Troutman

Johannes Petrus/Peter Haass (aka Peter Rabbit) was born on 4 March 1750, in Tulpehocken Township, Lancaster County (now Berks County), Pennsylvania. In German and Pennsylvania German, the word is translated to English as "rabbit." So it can be said that Peter Rabbit was a patriot. Peter Haass was the son of Abraham and Maria Catharine Haass and his birth and baptism dates can be found in the records of St. John’s Host Church, Tulpehocken Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania.

During the Revolutionary War, Peter Haass is noted as being a private in Captain Ladich’s Company, Berks County, Pennsylvania, Militia (guarding prisoners of war). The author of this biography lives just a short walk in Bernville from where his patriot ancestor Peter Haass/Rabbit is buried.

Peter was married to Elizabeth [surname unknown]. No marriage record has been found for them and her surname is unknown. Peter and Elizabeth Haass were the parents of four children:

  1. Maria Elisabeth.
  2. Johann Peter.
  3. Sophia.
  4. Sarah/Sallie.

He was a farmer his entire life in the area of what is now Bernville, Berks County. Pennsylvania. He died at his homestead on 2 July 1816 and was buried at the Old Northkill Church Cemetery, Bernville, Berks County, Pennsylvania.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
