Gulley, William (b. 10 Feb 1737, Scotland; d. Cumberland, NC) Married about 1762 to Bethany Hinnant (b. about 1742, NC; d. after 1791, NC). William served as a soldier in the mi1itia of the New Bern District in the Revolutionary War. His name is on page 339 in the “Roster of Soldiers from North Carolina In the Revolution", also in the Comptroller's Records, Militia of New Bern District Voucher No. 482. His place of residence during the War was New Bern District (as listed on DAR membership papers of Mrs. Louise Lindsey Smith #339472 and Mrs. May Bell Armstrong #364380). Service: Member of the NC Militia; he served as a Lieutenant under James Kenan, Duplin County. He was allowed five pounds compensation for 20 days service in 1776 on expedition against insurgents. Fought in the Battle of Moore’s Creek. He received pension of £ 15.00 (SAR Membership #37299,NSSAR Patriot & Grave Index Number P 171687)

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
