William Groves, age about 27 years, enlisted at the City of Annapolis, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, on 01 August 1780 at which place he resided and entered into the service of the United States under Capt. Lane’s Regiment raised by the state of Maryland, Commanded by Colonel Alexander Lawson Smith. He marched with the army to South Carolina and joined the Army Commanded by General Greene near the Cheraw hills, then all the soldiers of said Regiment were divided among the officers of the Maryland line and at that time he was attached to Captain McPherson’s Company of the Second Maryland Regiment. William Groves fought in the Battles near Camden SC, Eutaw Springs, SC and Guilford Courthouse, NC, and stated that he was “wounded by a cutlass to the head, also was wounded in the left leg by a ball” but continued in the army until the end of the war at which time he was honorable discharged on 17 Nov 1783. After his discharge William Groves resided in Prince William County, VA and was married to Mary Spencer, daughter of Elizabeth Spencer, by the Reverend Mayers in 1796. In 1812 along with Mary’s mother they moved to Allegany Co, Westernport District, Maryland. William and Mary were the parents of the following children; John, Rebecca, Jesse and Dennis (John and Rebecca both passing before reaching adulthood). In 1818 William Groves applied for and received a war pension of eight dollars per month until his death 04 January 1849. Mary then applied for and received a widow’s pension until her death 05 September 1856.
