Author: LTC Calvin Ashby Griffin USAF

William Griffin was born November 21, 1740 at Prince George County, Virginia.  His birth was recorded in the register of Bristol Parish, Virginia.  He died October 5, 1800 at Pendleton District – present-day Pickens County, South Carolina.

William Griffin married Sarah Elizabeth Kirksey at Chatham, North Carolina about 1760.  By their marriage were born the following children:  John (born 1762), Roseanna (born 1765), Haskey (born 1767) and Rebecca (born 1769).

After the death of his first wife, William Griffin married Elizabeth Stroud in 1772.  By their marriage were born the following children:  Henry (born 1773), William (born 1773), Oswell (born 1777), Sargent (born 1778), Elizabeth (born 1790) and Martha (born 1800).

William Griffin enlisted in Captain Gee’s Company in the 2nd Regiment of the North Carolina Continental Line in 1777.  He was a private and later a sergeant.  He was captured June 1, 1779 at Fort Lafayette, South Carolina and was imprisoned at Charleston.  Griffin transferred to Lytle’s Company in the 10th Regiment in 1781.

After his discharge from the Militia in 1783, William Griffin received a Land Grant of 640 acres.  He moved to Pendleton District, South Carolina, in 1790 to settle on the bounty land at Twelve Mile Creek.  His final resting place is not known, but is believed to be on family land.  There is a memorial marker for William Griffin at the Griffin Baptist Church near Pickens, South Carolina.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
