Author: Daniel Dean Green
JOHN GREEN was born about 1754 possibly in Lancaster County Pennsylvania died August 18, 1839 in Mercer Co, Pennsylvania the youngest son of Joseph Green Sr. and Jane Boyd Green. Jane’s family came to America in 1736 from County Antrium, Ireland. John married SUSANNAH HOLLOPETER November 22, 1774 in York Co, PA, daughter of MATTHIAS HOLLOPETER and Barbara Roose Hollopeter 1757- 1809 a wealthy German landowner. She was born February 15, 1759 in York Co, PA, and died 1809 in Mercer Co, PA. To this union were born six children: Barbara Green 1777-1834 who wed John Offutt 1765-1811, Jane Green 1781-1856 who wed John Deems 1776-1833, Susannah Green 1787-???? who wed Adam Barber 1787-????, John Green Jr. 1789-1839 who married Nancy Gilfillan 1795-????, Mary Green 1793-1882 who wed Thomas Barber 1780-1859 and Abraham Green 1796-1873 who married Martha Jane Gilfillan 1798-1852. John Green's mother Jane was from a devout Quaker family and John himself was also raised a Quaker however, John’s father Joseph had not been of the Quaker faith. Both he and his brother, Joseph Jr. were received into membership by the Warrington Meeting House in York county in August 11th,1764 after his father’s death in 1755 and his mother re-marrying John McMillan. John was disowned by the Quakers on February 11th, 1775, for marrying outside the faith to Susanna Hollopeter. During the Revolutionary War John Green was residing in Warrington Township in York County Pennsylvania. John by occupation was a farmer and blacksmith. According to the book State of Accounts of the County Lieutenants it lists in 1777 John Green as paying a fine of £11.5.0 pounds for missing muster. John’s Father-In-Law Matthias Hollopeter is also listed as paying a fine of £33.0.0 pounds. Uncles of John’s wife Susannah (Frederick Roose and Andrew Roose) are also listed. John Green did not serve in the Revolutionary War primarily due to his upbringing as a Quaker and Quakers generally did not serve in the military. John never re-married nor did he receive a war pension. John is recognized for his patriotic service having paid exoneration taxes to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania between 1780 to 1783. In 1802 John moved with his family to Mercer County Pennsylvania and purchased a farm from Michael Brown called “Henlopen.” His wife and some of his children accompanied him whereas in 1809 Susannah would pass away. After farming for 30 years and nearing his 80th year he disposed his land by deed and went to live with his son Abraham Green in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. On August 18th, 1839 John Green died. Recognized as an early pioneer, John is listed in the Plain Grove: A History of Early Settlement and the Planting and Growth of the Church in that Region by Rev. R. McCaslin. John was buried on the old Denniston Farm (Cemetery) in Mercer County PA (Now owned and recognized as the Stevenson Cemetery.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
