Jacob Graves (Greaves), Sr. was born on June 23, 1743 in New Castle County, Delaware. His parents were Jonathan Greaves (1712-1774) and Sarah Chandler (1712-1760) who were married in 1739.

Jacob’s siblings were Rebecca (1741-1747), Jonathan (1774-1834), Mary (1749-1771), and David (1754-?).
Jacob married Rebecca Langley, daughter of Jonathan Langley and Sarah Mendenhall of New Castle County, Delaware, on July 2, 1771 in Holy Trinity (Old Swedes) Church, Wilmington, Delaware. Rebecca was born about 1750 and died before 1816 in Christiana Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware.

Jacob was complained of on August 15, 1771 at the Newark-Kennett Friends Meeting because he had married out of the Quaker faith.

He enlisted in a Pennsylvania Rifle Regiment Company commanded by Captain Peter Grubb on March 23, 1776. The “Revolutionary War Patriots of Delaware lists Jacob Greaves as a private in a militia company in Cristiana Hundred along with David, Jonathan and Samuel Greaves. No further information about his military service has been found.

Jacob farmed at Wilmington, Delaware, about one-mile southeast of Centerville, New Castle County, Delaware. He sold his farm in the Christiana Hundred area on November 4, 1816 after the harvest season was completed and moved to Wayne County, Indiana.

Jacob Graves, Sr. died on April 15, 1817 (or 1818), a few days after his 85th birthday, in Whitewater, Wayne County, Indiana.

He was buried in the family lot in Smyrna Quaker graveyard about four miles southeast of Richmond, Indiana where his son Jacob Jr. and other family members are buried.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
