Simeon Gorton (1750-1828)

Simeon Gorton was born about 1750 in present-day Rhode Island. He married Elizabeth before the year 1775 in the part of Massachusetts that is now the State of Maine. He served as a soldier in the Massachusetts Militia in Colonel Josiah Brewer’s Penobscot Militia Regiment. Evidence of his service is found in the form of a “Petition from Penobscot River to the General County, 1777,” which is dated 5 November 1777, is found in the Massachusetts Archives, Vol. 183, Page 261-262, also published in the Bangor Historical Magazine, Vol. 4, pages 12-13.

The known children of Simeon Gorton and Elizabeth are given by Vital Records of Hampden, Maine, Prior to 1892, Volume 1: 1751-1835, page 28:

“The Berths of Mr. Simeon Gorton’s children which his wife Elisabeth bore him

Viz their daughter Prisca was Born December 25, 1775

Simeon Gorton died 28 August 1828 and was laid to rest in the Locust Grove Cemetery at Hampden, Penobscot County, Maine. On his headstone is etched: “SACRED to the memory of SIMEON GORTON, died Aug. 28, 1828. Aged 78.”

In his Last Will and Testament at Will Book 3, Page 525, Penobscot County, Massachusetts [presently Maine], Simeon Gorton named his [second] wife Catherine Rice Gorton, Buchan Haskins as trustee for his son Simeon Rice Gorton, daughter Priscilla Durrell, son James Gorton, daughter Elizabeth Kendall, daughter Welthy Wheeler, daughter Matilda Myrnick, with his wife Catherine as Executrix.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
