Author: Johnathan A. T. Saunders

Captain Obadiah Gore Sr. was born on 26 July 1714, the son of Samuel and Hannah (Draper) Gore.

He was the husband of Hannah Parke, and they were married on 4 November 1742. Obadiah was a blacksmith by trade, and legend credits him as the first American to burn anthracite in his forge in 1768 successfully. However, anthracite as an energy source would not be widely used for another forty years. He and his sons served as prominent members of the Susquehanna Company and were active with the Wyoming Committee of Settlers. In 1776, Gore raised a company of 20 men for service in the Continental Army.

By the summer of 1778, American Colonel Nathan Denison was informed by scouts that a force of approximately seven hundred Tories, Rangers, and Native American warriors under the command of Major John Butler and Chief Sayenqueraghta of the Seneca were gathering near Pittston at Fort Wintermute. On Friday, 3 July 1778, at about 2:00 P.M., some three hundred and seventy-five men marched out of Forty Fort toward Fort Wintermute, which had been set ablaze by the British.

In total, Obadiah had four sons present at the Wyoming Valley Massacre. Ensigns Silas Gore and Asa Gore, as well as Private George Gore, all perished in the battle, while Lieutenant Daniel Gore was shot in the arm. The eldest son, Obadiah Gore Jr., was not present at the massacre as he served in the Third Regiment, Connecticut Line, under General Gates at White Plans, New York. Obadiah Jr. would go on to serve the fledgling nation as a judge, helping settle the disputed boundaries between the states of Connecticut and Pennsylvania.

Captain Obadiah Gore Sr. would survive most of the conflict until he contracted smallpox and passed on 10 January 1779. He is buried in the Gore Family Cemetery in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
