Author: David Crandall Schafer

Jabez Goodspeed was born July 31, 1737, at Barnstable, Massachusetts, eldest child of Jabez Goodspeed and Reliance Tobey.  He had three siblings:  Jane, Heman and Benjamin.1  Jabez Goodspeed married Margaret Bassett, August 4, 1761, at Barnstable.  They were the parents of Jabez, Solomon and Nathan.

Goodspeed provided civil service as a citizen of the Town of Barnstable throughout his life.  At a town meeting held March 2, 1761, he was selected to be a Grand Juror.  He was selected to be a Petit Juror, March 18, 1779.  At the town meeting held March 20, 1781, Goodspeed was selected Warden.  He was chosen as Tythingman, March 20, 1783, and again in March 1784.2

Goodspeed was admitted to membership in the West Parish Church, September 13, 1761, and elected to be a Deacon of the Church in March 1797.  At a meeting of the church held July 6, 1812, he was elected to a church committee whose duty it should be “…to converse with those members of the church who walk disorderly and neglect to commune for an unreasonable time.”

Jabez Goodspeed died February 20, 1824, aged 86 years.  He was buried at the West Barnstable cemetery.   The legible portion of the inscription on his headstone is:

This Stone is Erected to the Memory of Deacon Jabez Goodspeed by the west Church in the Town, of which he had been a member 64 years & a Deacon 27, all which time his Character was irreproachable & his piety unquestionable, died Febr. 20th, 1824, AE 86.  Help Lord for the godly man ceaseth, for the faithful sail from among us, the children…

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
