Author: Joel Sanford Mize
Patriot Phillip Goodbread Sr. was born November 23, 1726 in Baden-Wuertemburg, Germany, son of Johann Ludwig Gutbrot and his wife, Christina Barbara (Schnickner). He immigrated into America with his parents as a four year old on the ship Samuel in 1731. About 1749, Phillip married Katherine Souder in Chester County PA. The couple had about 9 children born in PA and NC. Phillip entered the war in 1777 for a few months of service; he served again in 1781. Here’s is the summary of what’s known of his service: Phillip Goodbread Sr. fought in the American Revolution, as evidenced by pay voucher which shows he served as Sgt. from 30 Oct. to 30 Dec. 1777 in Capt. Robert Porter's Company "G" under Brigadier General Rutherford. For his service he was paid 6 Lbs, 17 Shillings and 6 Pence. (GS 4137119969, NC State Archives). He again served in 1781, according to a list of Rev. War Pay Vouchers in the NC Archives.
Four sons fought for the American cause. These sons were: Joseph, Thomas (killed), John and Phillip Jr. Phillip died in April 24, 1811 and is buried in Plemmons cemetery, Buncombe County NC on French River Road.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
