Author: Steven James Goforth
Preston Goforth, Jr. fought and died at the Battle of Kings Mountain on Oct. 7, 1780.

Preston was born to Preston and Rachel Clements Goforth on June 3, 1739 in Rutherford County, NC.

Preston, Jr. grew up in Rowan County where his father was the first constable of that county and owned a livery stable, a 400 acre farm in Rutherford County, and operated a lodging house in Rowan County.

Preston, Jr. married Nancy Elizabeth Potts and had five children: Sarah, Preston III, George, Elizabeth, and William. I am a descendant of George, who was born April 3, 1778.

Preston and Nancy owned a farm that was located in what is now the west side of the town of Kings Mountain. The story has been told that the Goforth family could hear the firing during the Battle of Kings Mountain.

Preston, Jr. joined the fight, and his brother John fought for the Tory side.

During the battle, the two brothers were seen firing at each other which resulted in both being killed on Oct. 7, 1780.

Preston's wife took a sled pulled by a mule and brought her husband's body off the mountain. She and some neighbors buried Preston on their farm in the backyard of their home place on Oct. 8, 1780.

I am proud and give thanks to my ancestor patriot Preston Goforth for his service and ultimate sacrifice for my freedom that me and my family enjoy today.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
