Christian Giltner (Güldner)

Christian was born at Heidelberg Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, 20 August 1763.  He was the eleventh child and fifth son of Frantz Güldner, an immigrant from the Rhine Palatinate of Germany, who arrived at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1738.  Christian lived within a few miles of the Blue Mountains, which at the time marked the frontier with Indian Territory.

Christian enlisted 14 May 1778 as a private in the General Muster in the Fourth Class of the Seventh Company of the Third Battalion for the Northampton County, Pennsylvania, Militia.  Three of Christian’s brothers were also enlisted in the same class.  Christian is additionally listed in the muster rolls of the Continental Line and Rangers on the Frontier.  The men from the various townships were organized at the company level.  All the members of the Seventh Company were from Heidelberg Township.

In the Third Battalion, Christian served under Colonel Michael Poost.  This term of service was until 28 July 1778, when the Third Battalion was dismissed at Weisenberg Township, Northampton County.  Christian received payment of £40 for his service.  Christian was mustered into subsequent services, 26 October 1780 and 20 September 1782.  By 1780, the Third Battalion had been reorganized as the Sixth Battalion under Colonel Henry Giger.  Christian and his brothers remained in the Seventh Company, Fourth Class.  The Sixth Battalion was called into service 21 September 1782, and served until 28 October of the same year.

Evidence of Christian’s military service entailed is found in the pension application for Revolutionary War service from his brother Frantz.  Frantz stated they were stationed on the Indian frontier at Fort Allen at the Lehigh River at what is present-day Weissport, Pennsylvania.  The fort was strategically placed on the north side of the Blue Mountains protecting the Lehigh Gap.  Of additional historic interest, Fort Allen was designed by Benjamin Franklin who supervised its construction in 1756.  Frantz described their militia duties as “…scouting parties and watching the Indians and Tories…”

In the year 1799 Christian appeared for the first time on a tax list of Penn Township, Union County (then Northumberland).  He was listed as a carpenter.  He is said to have had six children: Wilhelmina, Conrad, Anna Elisabeth, John, Catharine, and James.  According to family tradition, most of them moved to Kentucky.

Christian claimed to have married Mary Elizabeth Arnold in 1789.  He moved to Turbot Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, where he died 18 May 1835.  Christian was buried in the Old Allentown Cemetery at the corner of Tenth and Linden at Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
