Stephen Gilman was born at Kingston on 24 Aug 1757, a posthumous son of Jacob and his wife Abigail (Moody) Gilman; Stephen died at Unity on 17 Mar 1830. Stephen married 1st, Annie Huntoon, baptized 22 Jul 1757, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Corbin) Huntoon; she died at Unity on 4 Nov 1792. He married 2nd at Unity on 5 Sep 1793, Dorothy Clough; she was born 13 Mar 1775, died Unity 25 Apr 1855. Stephen Gilman was a Cavalry officer in the Rev. War, and various gravestone inscriptions describe him as "Captain". He built and operated Unity's first sawmill and grist mill. According to family accounts, Stephen fathered 21 children, 9 by Anna and 12 by Dorothy. The nineteen children listed below were derived from cemetery inscriptions, family accounts and the wills of Stephen Gilman, written 8 Mar 1826 and proved 14 Apr 1830 and Dorothy Gilman, written 7 Mar 1854 and proved 27 Jun 1855. These wills seemed to identify in birth order most of their living children as well as some deceased children, viz: Children Stephen Gilman and Anna (Huntoon): Abigail m. Stevens, d. by 1826. Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
