Author: Mark Andrew Davis

The following biography was written by PRS staff, and some information was provided by Mike Gunn.

Joseph Gillette was born on 4 June 1753 [he states in his pension that he was born on 15 June 1750] at Simsbury, Hartford County, Connecticut, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Hayes) Gillett.

In 1776, he entered the service from Hartford as a Private in Captain Samuel Hay's Connecticut Company, which was commanded by Colonel Jonathan Pettibone's Regiment. In his company was a drummer named Azariah Gillit and a Private named Nathan Gillit.

He served for about three months. Later, in 1779, he served in the cavalry in the company of Captain Andrew Hillyer of the Connecticut Light Horse of the Continental Army. He served a tour of four months. Also, during that year, he served as a teamster in Captain Joseph Higley’s company for six months, where he drove wagons of supplies from Hartford to places like Fishkill, New York.

He married Mary Rowe in about 1782, probably in Hartford. Their known children were:

  • Joseph was born about 1783 and married Lucinda Chapman.
  • Amasa was born about 1787 and married Susannah Burr.
  • Sarah was born on 2 April 1792 and married Silas Davis.
  • Clara was born in 1796 and died young.
  • Orasamus was born on 13 October 1803 and married Elizabeth Mitchell.

After Mary’s death, Joseph married Persis “Parcey” Andrews on 17 November 1806 in Hartford, Connecticut. They were married by Richard Porter, a Presbyterian Minister. Their known children were:

  • Harold was born on 13 April 1808 and married Permelia Scribner.
  • Elizabeth was born about 1813 and married Jonathan Ayers.

On 12 November 1832, Joseph, a Marlborough Township, Delaware County, Ohio resident, sat for his deposition related to an application for a Military Pension.

The Patriot died on 7 May 1836 at Marion County, Ohio, and was buried at Wyatt Cemetery, Waldo, Marion County, Ohio. There is an old gravestone that is said to belong to Joseph, along with a modern Veteran’s Administration flat marker that states, “Joseph Gillet, Connecticut VT 18 Regt Conn. Militia-Revolutionary War.”

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
